How to Section

How to refill your neutralizer:

1: Start the backwash on the filter to lift the bed so it will be easier to suck the dirt/iron off the bed and help prevent burping the filter. After 5 minutes of backwash, shut the water off to the system. (Use your bypass valve to do this.)

2: Check the pistons for leaking and slow movement/or binding of piston. If there is a problem, the piston should be replaced.

3: Replace the O-ring on the Blue White check valve (should flush the check valve with the ball out). If the brass brine valve shutoff is not holding, replace it with another brass valve and 1/4" plastic ball valve & Blue White check valve. If the Blue White check valve is in poor condition, replace it.

4: Open the filter and suck down the dirty/rusty water & mineral. If dirty, rusty mineral can't be cleared, you may have to dump and repack the filter. Add back the xo marble to right level 15" from the top. Put the closure back on. (If it is the old black closure, replace it with new pvc closure.) Turn the water on to the filter and put unit into backwash for one minute. Then bump filter, bumping backwash for one minute, then shutting water off for 30 seconds. Then backwash for another minute. Stop, let bed settle. Do this about 3 or 4 times then let it backwash on its own. Bumping will prevent 95% of the filters from burping.

5: Make sure the timer motor is working. Should be replaced if it is not working correctly.

6: Reset timers on filter and softener. (Correct current time of day.)

7: When the water is shut off, clean all the venturis on filter and softener.

8: Check for leaks.

9: You should set the softener (if present) to backwash that night.

10: The water may be dirty for a short time and you may need to run the cold water if it is dirty until it clears. The softener may need an additional recharge.

How To Care For Your Private Well
Your well can be contaminated by:

  • Openings in the well seal
  • Improperly installed well casing
  • Well casing not deep enough
  • Well casing not sealed
  • A remote source of contamination not related to well construction

Make sure that:

  • Sanitary seal or well cap is securely in place and water-tight
  • Cap is at least 12 inches above the ground
  • Joints, cracks and connections in the well casing are sealed
  • Surface water does not pond near the well
  • Well pump and distribution systems are checked regularly
  • Changes in the quantity and quality of water are investigated immediately

How Often To Test?
Dug Wells - at least four (4) times per year. Drilled Wells - at least one (1) time per year. Water Quality may fluctuate due to changes in the water table or a change in water usage. If there is a noticeable change in your water quality, a chemical test, as well as a bacteria test, is recommended.

How to bypass your system

Below are the different style bypass valves we use.

 Ecowater bypass valves:

Autotrol Bypass Valve:

To bypass the conditioner with the 256 bypass valve, rotate the handles clockwise so they are both perpendicular to the flow path or the inlet and outlet water stream as shown below.

To return to the conditioned water or service position, rotate the handles counterclockwise so they are parallel to the flow path of the inlet and outlet water stream, as shown below.

Quad-Flo Bypass Valve:
A single 90 degree turn of the two-position handle allows full service to pass.

Single Valve Bypass:
Push out for soft water, push in for hard water.  Valve ends are usually marked.

3 Valve Bypass:
For service:

  • Open the inlet and outlet valves
  • Close the bypass valve

For bypass:

  • Close the inlet and outlet valves
  • Open the bypass valve

Max Flow Uni Bypass Valve:
For service:

  • Open both blue valves
  • Close the red valve

For bypass:

  • Close both blue valves
  • Open the red valve

HOW TO CHLORINATE YOUR WELL

THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE PROVIDED AS A COURTESY BY G.W.INC.  BASED ON OUR EXPERIENCE IN THIS AREA. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE AND IT IS POSSIBLE YOU MAY HAVE TO REPEAT THIS PROCESS OR INSTALL A ULTRA-VIOLET LIGHT SYSTEM. G.W. INC  ACCEPTS NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE OUTCOME. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

1. IF YOU HAVE A WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM, PLEASE PUT THE SYSTEM ON BY-PASS AND IF YOU HAVE A REVERSE OSMOSIS DRINKING WATER SYSTEM SHUT OFF ITS FEED WATER VALVE. THIS WILL PROTECT THEM FROM BEING DAMAGED BY THE CHLORINE.  THESE SYSTEMS SHOULD BE DISINFECTED SEPARATELY.
2. TURN POWER TO WELL OFF
3. REMOVE THE WELL CAP. (IF THE WELL CAP HAS THREE OR FOUR SET SCREWS AROUND THE TOP, THIS IS A JOB YOU CAN DO YOURSELF. IF IT HAS ONE LARGE BOLT IN THE CENTER OF THE CAP, YOU SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE CAP. GET A LICENSED WELL CONTRACTOR TO DO IT FOR YOU.)
4. FOR A STEEL CASING WELL USE APPROXIMATELY ONE CUP GRANULATED CHLORINE. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND USING LIQUID CHLORINE BLEACH ON STEEL CASING BECAUSE IT CAN BREAK LOOSE CORROSION FROM THE SIDE OF THE CASING WHICH MIGHT BE SUCKED UP INTO THE PUMP AND SEIZE IT UP. MOST HARDWARE OR POOL SUPPLY STORES CARRY THIS TYPE OF CHLORINE.
FOR PVC CASING WELL YOU CAN USE EITHER THE GRANULATED CHLORINE OR TWO GALLONS OF LIQUID CHLORINE BLEACH.
YOU WILL BE ADDING THE CHLORINE TO THE ANNULAR SPACE WITHOUT GETTING ANY ON THE WIRE NUT CONNECTIONS AT THE TOP OF THE WELL. DO NOT PUT CHLORINE IN THE CENTER HOLE OR IN THE CENTER PIPE BECAUSE THIS IS A DEAD END SO THE CHLORINE WILL NOT GET INTO THE WATER.
5. PUT THE CAP BACK ON THE WELL
6. TURN THE POWER TO THE WELL BACK ON
7. HOOK UP TWO HOSES OUTSIDE AND LET THE WATER RUN UNTIL YOU CAN SMELL CHLORINE. (THE PURPOSE OF USING TWO HOSES IS SO THE PUMP WILL RUN CONTINUOUSLY INSTEAD OF CYCLING ON AND OFF.) WHEN YOU CAN SMELL CHLORINE OUTSIDE, TURN THE HOSES OFF AND RUN ALL THE FAUCETS IN THE HOUSE UNTIL YOU CAN SMELL CHLORINE. TURN FAUCETS OFF AND LET CHLORINATED WATER SIT IN THE PLUMBING LINES FOR 12-24 HOURS. DURING THIS TIME YOU SHOULD NOT DRINK, BATHE, WASH CLOTHES, OR COOK WITH THE CHLORINATED WATER BUT YOU CAN FLUSH THE TOILET WITH IT.
8. THE NEXT DAY YOU NEED TO RUN THE WATER LONG ENOUGH TO PURGE THE SYSTEM. START BY RUNNING THE HOSES AGAIN UNTIL YOU CAN NO LONGER SMELL CHLORINE OUTSIDE. THEN TURN OFF THE HOSES AND RUN ALL FAUCETS INSIDE UNTIL YOU CAN NO LONGER SMELL CHLORINE. IF YOU ARE CHLORINATING THE WELL IN ORDER TO TAKE A COLIFORM BACTERIA WATER SAMPLE, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CHLORINE THOROUGHLY PURGED FROM THE SYSTEM BEFORE YOU TAKE THE SAMPLE. IF THE LAB DETECTS CHLORINE THEY WILL NOT TEST YOUR SAMPLE. PURGING THE CHLORINE FROM THE SYSTEM CAN TAKE ANYWHERE FROM TWO TO SIX HOURS. THERE IS NO WAY TO KNOW HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE. RUN IT UNTIL YOU CAN NO LONGER SMELL CHLORINE.
9. IF YOU ARE TAKING A COLIFORM BACTERIA WATER TEST, TAKE IT NOW AND WITH THE WATER CONDITIONER STILL ON BY-PASS. IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE A SAMPLE YOU CAN TAKE THE WATER CONDITIONER OFF BY-PASS AND IF YOU HAVE A REVERSE OSMOSIS DRINKING WATER SYSTEM, TURN IT BACK ON AS WELL.
